I have a confession to make... I loved this show when I was a kid.Loved it.
I never understood why it didn't get as much play a "Transformers", "GI Joe" or even a show like "Mask".
Time has made my memory of Robotech stale, but what I did retain was this: Robotech was a badass bunch of people piloting a badass bunch of machines that fought some pretty badass fights.
Yet is was much more than that.
Robotech was darker than your average cartoon. I always felt that the subject matter of a Robotech episode was aimed at an audience older than I was. And that made me feel cool for watching it. I wanted to 'get it', even if my friends blew it off as not worthy of their afternoon cartoon viewing time.
Had the internet existed when I was that age, I'm sure I would have sought out a haven of Robotech geeks I could relate with.
I wish I could remember the story arches of the show better. In fact, after reading about the possibility of Robotech making a big screen return, I now harbor intentions to seek out a few episodes this weekend in an attempt to validate what I think I'm remembering.
Perhaps the magic will still be there.
And with Lawrence Kasdan (who wrote 'The Empire Strikes Back') at the writers desk, hopefully we'll see that magic up on the big screen someday soon.

- 86 days agoRobotech was pretty good, but seriously...as a fan of the show, I made it a point to dig up MACROSS and it's sequels. 1000x better. Trust me.
- 86 days agoConsider yourself warned that its dated animation and voiceovers may not exactly match up to your memories; however, you're absolutely right that it was (by virtue of its origins) much more mature-themed than other 80's afternoon kid's fare.
Try picking up the Jack McKinney-penned novelizations of the series -- they've got all the interpersonal drama and violent battle goodness, none of the shlock, and even more intricate space opera. It's pulp writing, to be certain, but very enjoyable.
